Parking in Stockholm is regulated by a zone system. The city centre is divided into paid parking zones with varying rates.
Parking Zones
- Red Zone: City centre (Gamla Stan, Norrmalm, Östermalm) — highest rates, limited time
- Yellow Zone: Surrounding districts (Södermalm, Vasastan) — moderate rates
- Blue Zone: Outer areas and residential districts — lower rates, permits common
- Green Zone: Outer suburbs — free or low-cost
Rates (2026)
- Red zone: ~25–40 SEK/hour
- Yellow zone: ~10–20 SEK/hour
- Blue zone: ~5–10 SEK/hour (or free evenings/weekends)
Paid parking generally applies Mon–Fri 9:00–18:00 (shorter Saturdays). Sundays and public holidays are usually free.

- Parking meters — accept coins, cards, and Swish
- SMS parking — text your licence plate to the zone number
Parking Garages
Several underground and multi-storey car parks, especially in the city centre:
- P-hus (parking houses) operated by Stockholm Parkering
- Typical rates: 35–55 SEK/hour, 250–500 SEK/day
- Monthly passes available for frequent users
Residential Permits
Stockholm residents can apply for a parking permit from the Transport Administration (Trafikkontoret). The permit allows parking in the resident’s zone for ~900–1,200 SEK/year. Permit holders still pay a reduced hourly rate in their own zone.
Tips
- The city centre has very limited street parking — use P-hus garages
- Park & Ride facilities at metro/commuter stations offer cheap all-day parking (20–30 SEK/day)
- Winter tyre rules: studded tyres allowed 1 Oct–15 Apr (may affect parking)
- Electric vehicles get free parking in many on-street spaces (check signage)
- Enforcement is strict — fines run ~700–1,100 SEK for violations
