Stockholm is governed by the Stockholm City Council (Stockholms stad). The famous Stockholm City Hall (Stadshuset) is the seat of the city government, known for hosting the Nobel Banquet.

The city is divided into 14 district councils (stadsdelsområden) , each handling local services for residents:
- Norra innerstaden, Östra innerstaden, Södra innerstaden, Västra innerstaden
- Enskede-Årsta-Vantör, Farsta, Hägersten-Älvsjö, Skärholmen
- Hässelby-Vällingby, Järva, Bromma, Kungsholmen, Norrmalm, Södermalm, Östermalm
Key Services
Each district council handles:
- Population registration (folkbokföring) — through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), not city offices
- Social services — childcare, elderly care, financial assistance
- School enrolment — primary and secondary schools
- Building permits — minor construction and renovations
- Waste management — collection schedules and recycling
National services (passports, ID cards, driving licences) are handled by the Swedish Police Authority — book appointments online via polisen.se.
Digital Services
Stockholm is almost entirely digitised. Most government interactions are handled via:
- Skatteverket — personal ID number (personnummer), tax
- Försäkringskassan — social insurance
- Swedish Police Authority — passports, national ID cards

Most district offices accept walk-ins but appointments are recommended. Book via the district council’s website or by phone.

- Your personnummer (personal identity number) is essential for all official business in Sweden
- Queue numbers (könummer) are used in all public offices
- English is widely spoken at all government counters
- For municipal parking permits, contact the Traffic Office (Trafikkontoret)
